Car registration tax
A total of €14.7 million were collected in registration tax of second hand cars imported up to September 26 this year. The registration tax on new cars imported in the same period amounted to €23.1 million, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt yesterday told Labour MP Chris Agius in reply to parliamentary questions.

How much of the €14.7 million are ILLEGALLY charged VAT on another Tax?!
When will justice be done to all those people that have had to pay a tax upon a tax?
Whatever happened to the EU deadline of last June?

Registration tax to be replaced
Herman Grech
The Government is planning to replace the car registration tax with an environmenally-friendly levy, The Sunday Times has learnt, which may lead to cheaper cars on the local market.
Reforming the tax will form part of the Government's next legislative programme - if elected - Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech said yesterday.
The news comes days after EU finance ministers discussed a European Commission proposal to substitute the car registration tax regime with a system based on congestion and C02 emissions.
Malta imposes one of the highest registration tax regimes on imported cars in Europe, which means cars sold on the island are among the most expensive on the continent
Since the reform requires an adequate consultation period, detailed studies on technical mechanics and the proposed changes may only come into force after the general election.

Wow. Wer'nt we told that, in 2006, Government collected Lm30million (€70million) from registration tax and that changes in car taxation must safeguard this revenue? The prospects from this year are €50million. Next year, I predict, revenue will be even lower, even if one takes into consideration any increases in circulation tax.

Hon J. Dalli,
It is about time that the owners of Vehicles who are abusing the system and drive around in cars which import tax have not been paid for (with K & Y number registration plates), own up and pay the duties due,
This is a matter of a number of priviliged people with garage license connections being allowed to cheat the taxman and drive around in top of the range vechiles which are meant to a bona fide self drive hired car or a taxi , and the ironic part is these are the ones who should or ought to know and can afford better!

Can anyone forsee if any of this money or at least a part of it paid by returned migrants or foreign residents is going to be RETURNED to us in the next budget?? I verymuch doubt it. The maltese government takes it with both hands but getting it back is like drawing blood out of a stone, virtual impossible, so as we say back home once bitten twice shy, thank god we'll be going back along with our vehicle, at least my car has already paid its registration duty, don't see why i should forfeit more money then what the motor vehicle is worth, well......It day light robbery don't you think my maltese friends.. any comments?i say try getting extra cash from ALL THE EYESORE empty properties or at least rent them out cheaper then letting them rot away in this lovely sun of yours.
