The man accused of shooting dead his business partner in Qormi last month had his request for bail turned down yesterday on grounds that more witnesses still have to testify.

Spiridione Mercieca is pleading not guilty to murdering Martin Scicluna at their office in Qormi on September 16.

Defence lawyer Joseph Giglio requested bail on behalf of his client on Wednesday, saying the main witnesses in the case had testified. He also argued that his client would definitely not abscond because of his strong ties with the country. In addition, one had to bear in mind the fact that the accused had more than fully cooperated with the police in their investigations.

However, Police Inspector Chris Pullicino insisted the accused should not be granted bail because of the seriousness of the crime.

After hearing that there are still more witnesses to testify, the court turned down the request for bail until they have been heard.

Testifying earlier this month, Mr Pullicino said the accused had walked into the law court building soon after the fatal shooting to give himself up.

In a statement to the police, Mr Mercieca said that Mr Scicluna had been misappropriating money from the business they shared.

Two witnesses told the court this week that the victim had openly complained to them about Mr Mercieca saying he wanted him out of the business as he had caught him "fiddling" with the finances.

The office where the shooting occurred was opened on Thursday for the court to hold an on-site inquiry. Items inside the office, including computers, electronic equipment and company documents, were removed as evidence.
