Habitat protection at Ta'Cenc extended

Habitat protection has been extended to the whole of Ta' Cenc, MEPA said this afternoon.

It said that Wied Moqbol and Benghajsa Point have been declared protected areas within the Natura 2000 Network, while protection to Ta' Cenc has been extended to include the plateau.

Natura 2000 is a network of protected areas across the European Union.

MEPA explained that the Wied Moqbol and Benghajsa Point area covers coastal cliffs, in view of their seabird communities.

The Special Protection Area at Ta’ Ċenċ has been extended to the whole of the plateau area.

"With respect to provisions of the Habitats Directive, the whole area of Ta’ Ċenċ, including both the cliffs and the plateau, has been declared as a Special Area of Conservation in view of the various natural habitats and plant species found in the area," MEPA said.

Excellent news - I am looking forward to seeing it in writing and on plans. I hope this will be detailed in The Times 'paper' edition tomorrow.

One would wish that a site plan of the area which has been granted such a status is included to show the extent of the area which has been granted such a status...but this is a great news for conservation in Malta.

Does this mean the end to all the development plans at Ta Cenc ??

Does this mean that the blasting and other atrocities that are shaking Wied Moqbol & the vicinities daily stop?? I can assure you that no bird dare breed in the vicinity of such a dust polluted area where even the cliffs have been shattered to pieces .I hope that protection doesn't stop on paper. In any case, this first step deserves to be applauded.
