I was really disgusted to read and hear that the St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation had applied for changes to St John's exterior and beneath it, simply to have more space for the museum's display.
Miriam Cremona (September 18) came up with an excellent idea as to where the tapestries could be spread out in all their splendour at St John's Co-Cathedral's museum as well as the other artefacts, thus easing the problem of a big number of people visiting at the same time.
The foundation has not given a thought to the fact that St John's Co-Cathedral is a Grade 1 monument. The so-called yard (picture) is a burial place of great historic importance.
The foundation must have also overlooked the damage that would be caused to St John's Square and Merchants Street paving if the proposed project was to take place.
I can only hope that the foundation will finally come to its senses and give up the idea of touching St John's Co-Cathedral even if Mepa will be happy to issue permits. It will be a very sad day for Malta if the proposed project were to materialise.
I suggest that the tapestries are displayed at St John's on special occasions such as Christmas and Easter as used to be done before St John's was taken over by the foundation.
That way, the people of Malta would be able to appreciate them in their natural surrounding at least once a year.
