The Malta team composed of Tony Drago and Alex Borg were eliminated from the 2008 PartyPoker World Cup of Pool, currently being played in Rotterdam, when they lost to England 8-4 in the first round.

The England side, consisting of reigning 9-Ball world champion Daryl Peach and current European no.1 Mark Gray, produced arguably the best performance of the tournament so far and showed why they are regarded as one of the favourites to win this year's World Cup.

The Maltese committed few mistakes but trailed 5-0 before winning the next two racks for 5-2. Though Drago and Borg reduced the deficit to 7-4, any hope of a fightback ended in the next rack when England cleared the table for an 8-4 win to advance into the last 16.

Home favourites Holland were surprisingly eliminated 8-3 by Belgium while defending champions China had a tough 8-6 win over India.
