An Alternattiva Demokratika delegation met with representatives of the Women's Confederation to discuss budget proposals that will help advance the political and social status of women. Mary Anne Zammit, AD spokesman for health and social protection, referred to Eurostat data indicating that Malta has the lowest level of female employment in the EU.
The confederation's proposals include the need to set up more childcare facilities, launching more flexible conditions for women returning to work after maternity leave, the introduction of a father's right to parental leave and a more comprehensive review of income tax.
The meeting also discussed the importance of female health issues. The confederation would like to see breast screening programmes extended to all women and priority given to targeted health education programmes.
AD has urged the government to consider these proposals in the forthcoming budget and expressed a desire to see more women take an active role in politics.
