to William Attard McCarthy, Sorry I did not know that out Government had the right to rent our public lands without the public concern?. May be you could tell me how did you manage to get this land , how much rent you are paying and tell what can I do so I can be your neighbour too?.....Also in little Armier they too have electricity and water but still they are illegal and should be pull down not Il- Forza tirbah....few years ago they tried to pull them down and our police or better our Goverment did not do it because of VOTEs -How I do not know---Only in Malta

The Ghadira caravans or better say favelas are not illegal but they should be made so.

Well done, finally someone has really approached the problem in a proper manner without thinking how this is going to impact his political career, reputation and votes like other before him did. Once the ghajn tuffieha squatters problem is settled other areas should be taken into consideration such as Mistra where a number of small garages are present on the left of the bay.

I sincerely hope that places like old barracks in ghajn tuffieha are sustainably preserved sustainably. These would serve as ideal quarters for various youth associations. They would be ideal to host youth meetings or camps. I hope this suggestion is given consideration and not make this historical area become part of the hotel nearby!!!!!!!!

Well Done Minister Gatt for having the guts to clear out such illegalities. I myself once was walking at Bahar ic caghaq near the caravans and my daughter was on her bike, when this young boy threw us a stone and told us "itilqu il barra ax hawnhekk mhux taghkom!". It was the first time i had kept on walking inwards (since there was the newly done tarmac). AGAIN WELL DONE.

All so called "boat houses" should be demolished and cleared throughout the islands, no ifs, no buts, and no excuses. If and where boat houses are needed, and are of no hindrance to the general community, then new ones should be built. These should be of a standard architect design throughout, in accordance with rules and regulations that ensure the protection of the environment, and do not adversely affect the hygiene and aesthetics of the immediate surroundings. The user-pay principle should also be applied by local councils uniformly.

...kindly note that the Ghadira caravans are NOT illegal. Each room owner pays a ground rent to the Lands Dept every year, as well as having legal electricity/water meters installed in each and every room, as well as drainage.

Whilst they are at it the land's department should check the boat houses in Qawra, they seemed to have mushroomed all around the pre existing garages, most built illegally and occupying public ground whilst stealing electricity and water, which Minister Gatt now expects the law abiding person to pay for with increased tariffs.
The health department/MEPA should also check that the garages are used as boat houses or garages not Summer apartments that turn the area into a shanty town.

As a former military man, and now, as John citizen, my heart sings to see these lovely barracks returned to the nation. I hope something sensible is done with them. Pity the army was never interested in keeping these as training barracks. Ideal place really, with clean air, and safe areas to train, without disturbing anybody, or any danger of getting run over, as opposed to Luqa barracks, which are terrible when it comes to doing PT, with everybody dodging traffic. I suppose with the hotel next door, that's now out of the question. Btw, I wonder if the old officers' mess occupiers are being evicted as well?? Don't know if the people there had a title to the place, being the family of a former army commander themselves. I wonder.

Still, if the rest get cleared out, it will be another jewel returned to the nation, rather than being the unofficial (almost official, since glares abound, when I take people to visit these former barracks). So good luck to the person in charge of removing these thieves, and long may this work continue.

Its time we have a look at Mellieha bay GREEN SHAMBLES....when are they also be served with eviction notice. Its also a tax payer land and they have no right to be there. The sun goes up for everybody many places are in the same position. Either every one is evicted or none. Ix-xemx ghal kullhadd titla when they are going to clean everywhere.

And about time too! Keep up the good work!
however remember it is not only the squatters who are ruining the environment outside the development zones! Some of the new buildings have a Mepa permit, and let's not blame it on the need to grow and increase the number of jobs! What about the empty premises? about time something was done to incentivise owners to rent out! Hopefully this will happen soon before it is too late for our environment.
