A pot to feed 5,000!
A lot will be put into the pot for the opening of the Birgu by Candlelight Festival on October 17. A lot.
The organisers, Execoor, are bringing to Malta a huge pentolone which holds the Guinness Record for the largest risotto ever made - feeding 5,000 people.
It will be used in Malta to 'feed the masses' and raise funds for the Siggiewi Homes during the festival.
Into the pot will go 20 chickens, 20 kgs of beef, 90 kg of luganiga sausages, 20 kg of cheese, 300 kg of rice, 60 kg of vegetables and 120 litres of white wine to produce a culinary feast.
The big pot is made of stainless steel. It has a diameter of 3.30 metres and weighs 520 kilos. The risotto had to be stirred continuously by nine cooks using long wooden oars. Taking part in the preparation will be ITS student chefs under the watchful eyes of an Italian master chef who is accompanying the pentolone.
The pot found its way in the Guinness Book of Records with a mega cooking event on June 18, 1998 in Casorate Sempione, a North Italian town twinned to Vittoriosa. The feat was later repeated in Manchester
For the Birgu by Candlelight event, the organisers will forward €2 from each serving of risotto to Dar Tal-Providenza. Each serving will cost €3.

What an amazing idea! I'm sure this activity will attract many people to Birgu. Some people have never seen Birgu and this is going to be a great opportunity to do so. It is also a great way to help the Dar Tal-Providenza and I am positive that many people are willing to help, after all it is all for a good cause. I am sure that there will be many poeple who are going to the Birgufest after all it is a family night out while helping a good cause. Well done to Mr John Galea, Mr Johnathan Muscat, Mr John Boxall and all those who are helping with this event.

It is very fitting that this event is organised in Birgu. The Cottonera people are very generous, if not the most generous. Those who, like me, used to live there, can feel the difference.

I thank Victor Scerri for the compliment he passed on the people living in Birgu. I would also like to thank the organisers in the name of all the birgu citizens for organizing such an activity in our hometown. I invite all the persons coming to Birgu on that day to take advantage and take a look around our cultural city. It will surely be a wonderful experience for first time comers. Well done and keep it up!!!

These positive remarks are really encouraging to the organisers of this event - John Galea and I from Execoor - who came up with this idea some months ago and thought that it would be the ideal activity to generate some funds to the Dar tal-Providenza. The idea behind charging only 3 Euros is to allow all to participate and donate. We hope to see you all there!

what a great event! for those who cant make it perhaps you could donate to others in need by logging on to freerice.com .it is a free site which is fun and educational where you answer questions on an array of topics which helps give free rice to the poor.it aids the UN World Food Program. perhaps some schools might like to introduce it as a different way of teaching students.

Very good idea indeed. Let's all of us cooperate by participating in this event. We know it's for a very good cause so we can donate €5 or even more if we want instead of €3

€3 is too insignificant for such a worthy cause. Make it €5 per serving and donate double the amount to Dar tal-Providenza. It's without doubt every Maltese's favourite charity and the response is bound to be overwhelming.
