I married a Maltese nearly 34 years ago and have visited Malta at least once a year since. Much as I love Malta I would not recommend it to others as a holiday destination.

I cycle round the island, taking the country roads where possible but I am increasingly dismayed by the rubbish thrown everywhere.

This is even more visible now that soft drinks are sold in plastic bottles. I wonder why the old system of giving a refund on the bottle is not adopted for the plastic bottles as, at least, that way the bottles can be collected and recycled rather than just thrown out.

Malta must rely on tourism to a great extent and so Malta should be a gem in the Mediterranean - should be but is not.

I will not drone on about the lack of customer service and that all too often you have a meal in a restaurant by the sea only to find the toilets are dirty, have no paper or are not working properly. The prices are European, the attitude is not.

The Malta I know and love is fast disappearing.

I sense a "could-not-care-less" attitude and a general lethargy. What a pity.
