Gozitan jailed for 30 years for warden's murder

Benny Attard, 50 of Xaghra, was this afternoon jailed for 30 years for the murder of Gozitan warden Fortunata Spiteri in 2001.

Mr Justice Giannino Caruana Demajo said that the murder seemed to be more motivated by money more than fear, as the accused had claimed.

The Court could not ignore the fact that the murder was premeditated and the victim was a public officer on duty.

Mr Attard this morning filed a guilty plea instead of undergoing trial by jury.

He was accused of having, with others, held and stabbed the warden while she was on duty on August 10 at about 9.45 p.m.

Another person is awaiting trial for the same crime.

Dear Mr Benson Williams,

When I was in Gozo last summer urrrr I found nothing whatsoever to do accept for smoke cigarettes and eat. Gozo is a peaceful place but too much of it gets to your head. Unlike Gozo, Malta is more lively, and you still do find places were there is noise and peace. Gozo will never be like Malta, your mentality is to be conservative.
S Saliba (on 8/10/08)
What has Gozo got to do with anything? Murders happen all over the world and have nothing to do with the place they happen in. People are people all over the world and it's people who commit crimes and not places. What about all murders that have happened in Malta, mysterious ones too, trials held behind closed doors, unsolved murders, etc? Grow up and stop talking nonsense. And before you come to any conclusions, no I am not Gozitan and do not live in Gozo, have no Gozitan relatives or friends, etc.

@Benson
The fact is that Malta and Gozo are one of the best places in the world to live in when considering everything: political stability, social conscience, safety, living standards, no natural disasters, etc etc. However it is very unfortunate that our charachter is such that we always have to moan and complain about nothing. The Maltese love to debate and argue. We just die to have a confrontation regardless the topic.

In this case, we have a non Maltese/Gozitan like yourself who is praising our islands, yet some people are so politically blinded that anything positive that is said or done to islands has to be rubbished and this despite the fact that you are in a much better position to judge our islands because you can compare. The government is spending millions to improve our image to increase tourism and then we get some idiot like this.

Benson, thank you for your praise and lets hope you can pass on the good word to your family and friends back home.

I read the blogs and my conclusion is : Don't care what anybody says,as a non Maltese or Gozitan, I still say that Gozo is one of the safest places to be in and live. Yes it looks as if the Gozitans always take 2nd. place, why I don't know, because comparing with cosmopolitan Malta GOZO to us is Heaven and that goes also for the locals..The fact that this case took place in Gozo, one just cannot *Paint* every gozitan with the same brush. I ,for one wouldn't live in Malta if you pay me(we all know why)Yes? but that doesn't mean I don't like the Maltese or Malta, its just Malta is NOT the Same - I repeat NOT the same as it used to be as i remember it, lets hope to god that Gozo don't turn up to be the same. so to you guys in Malta my last words are :THREE cheers for GOZO and the Gozitans., this is why most nationalities would prefer the Calypso Island to noisy Malta, no disrespect meant just my opinion doesn't necessary mean that everybody thinks the same. T.T.F.N.(feedbacks welcome) Thankyou

@ Mr.Vella

I lived in Gozo at the time of the murder, and although there is a lot to criticise (like is done in every single argument in which anything vaguely Gozitan is mentioned, and sometimes rightly so) what you said about Gozo, at least in this particular case, is a simple empty claim without a hint of essence or substance.

What is it that makes you believe that Benny Attard made a guilty plea and excluded all the other suspects? Do you sincerely believe that he pleaded guilty, was jailed for 30 years, and didn't make sure that the others will follow suit? And you actually think that the lawyer is THAT naive?

This apart from the fact that you managed to drag the whole Gozitan population in a murder case... That a number of (both) Gozitan and Maltese citizens would rather not get involved, not even with an anonymous phone call is more than true. But saying something like 'truth never comes out' in Gozo is simply pathetic. What you said is not about 'omerta' but you included the Judiciary system and all that comes with it.

Mr Victor Vella, why are you putting Gozo and its residents in the limelight? As if no murders take place in other parts of the world. Don't get me wrong, I'm not justifying crimes but with your own writing you are murdering the Gozitans!!! Please speak for yourself. Why don't you compare the number of murders that happen in Gozo and the number of murders that happen in your community (From your writing I can guess where you live, it's the same old story - treating the Gozitans as second class citizens).
P.Xuereb (on 6/10/08)
At Benson Williams. You are totally wrong. If what you say, was true, then USA should be nirvana land. They have the death penalty after all.
No Benson, its got to do with the size of the country, education, culture, how we are brought up from when we are kids etc.. But do you really think that in Malta we do not have our fair share of brutal crimes ? Don't know how long you've been living in Malta, but believe me, sometimes people are murdered here for sick silly things.
Benson Williams (on 6/10/08)
If this case was tried in the UK the guy would have received a third of the years mentioned and If only that - with remission would probably be 3 .5 years, thats how British justice works and this why there are more crimes committed on daily basesin Great Britain!!! then any other country in europe., thats how easy and slap happy the British Justice is. We say the Maltese Justice is a Just one and culprits get what they deserve..that is why Malta and Gozo are a safe country to live in because like Dubai and other arab countries tend to have less crime in fear of stiff penalites , be it murder, drugs, stealing etc.,etc.,etc.,.
victor vella (on 6/10/08)
The problem with an accused who committed the crime with others pleading guilty could be that the other co accused will have a field day blaming the one who pleaded guilty.Gozo is renowned for hiding the truth. With all due respect to many Gozitans I know the truth never comes out there.I do hope that the victim rests in peace.Whatever she did or knew she definately didnt deserve this.
Charles Micallef (on 6/10/08)
This was an awful act of cowardice as well as a brutal murder,
30 yrs if I am not mistaken, he will be out in 15years with good behaviour,
he will then be 65 years of age.......
and the victim?
Edward Fenech (on 6/10/08)
When you're 50, 30 years is life, Sur Borg Cardona
Charles Camilleri (on 6/10/08)
30 yrs for cold blooded and premeditated murder is not much considering that he will get 10 yrs remission.
I. Zerafa (on 6/10/08)
it is a life sentence when you consider that the accused is 50 years old!
John Borg (on 6/10/08)
@ Edward Fenech
Somehow, this person might have felt more at peace with himself by pleading guilty, rather that go through with the jury and lying through his teeth. Being a crime allegedly committed by more than one person, hiding the eventual truth is difficult and probably futile.
JOE CORDINA (on 6/10/08)
30 YEARS IS NOT LIFE MY FRIEND. AND HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED
Andrew Borg-Cardona (on 6/10/08)
30 years isn't life.
C Cassar (on 6/10/08)
Edward Fenech: In my opinion a sentence should be determined by the crime, full stop. I don't think people should get sentenced according to how they plead. Not to mention the practice of handing out lighter sentences where the accused is "forgiven" by his victim ... with all the risks that this entails of perversion of justice (on the lines of "forgive me or I'll look you up when I get out").
Edward Fenech (on 6/10/08)
What's the scope of pleading guilty if you are going to get a life sentence anyway?
