The Infrastructure Ministry said today that despite public comments by the Opposition it could not, at this stage, comment on the ongoing investigation into activities at MITTS.

The ministry said that following criticism of its silence, and even the attribution of certain motives for the ministry's stance, minister Austin Gatt had sought advice from the Police Commissioner on whether public comment could prejudice the investigation.

Mr Rizzo's reply was the following:

"I understand your position and the political implications involved. On the other hand I am sure you understand that divulging certain facts might be detrimental to the course of investigations currently being conducted by the Cyber Crime Unit. I would like to assure your goodself that members of this Unit are working night and day to try to conclude case as early as possible.

"I have no objection that you publish this public statement by saying that an thorough investigation is in progress by the Police through their Cyber Crime Unit. That a number of persons have been arrested and assisting the Police in their investigations without mentioning any names of the suspects. One can also add that investigations have reached a stage where all Pc's seized by the Police and the main server suspected to have been compromised are being thoroughly checked for information."
