European Union monitors in Georgia observed the dismantling of a Russian checkpoint near breakaway South Ossetia in the "first open sign" of a promised pullback by October 10, an EU spokesman said.
The spokesperson said the checkpoint was in the Ali region of Georgia, northwest of the town of Gori.
Russia has said it will withdraw troops from two "security zones" inside undisputed Georgian territory by October 10, under a ceasefire agreement brokered by France after Russia and Georgia fought a brief war in August.
