White night brightens grey skies

Ready and waiting: A guard stands outside Auberge de Castille waiting for the crowds yesterday evening as Notte Bianca got underway. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier.

Despite an early downpour and a temporarily overcast sky, which threatened to mar the night of culture and entertainment ahead, the weather held out for last night's third Notte Bianca in Valletta.

The crowds that flocked to the event were treated to the largest and most varied programme to date, with over 100 activities held across the capital, from City Gate to Auberge de Baviere, throughout the night.

For the first time, all Heritage Malta museums and sites in the capital were open to the public for free, and many of its streets were adorned with the decorations of its various parish feasts.

Performances at the Manoel Theatre, the old Opera House and other venues were repeated throughout the evening so they could be viewed by the maximum number of people, while looped costume theatre performances took place at roaming locations.

Among the attempts to breathe new life into old buildings, or completely change their use for one night, the old market was transformed into a traditional tavern and crafts area, while designers Charles and Ron launched their glamorous CR spring/summer 2009 collection on the steps of the Stock Exchange.

well surprise, surprise. more blatant whining and nitpicking from pessimists who can't enjoy something and leave it at that. but i guess you all have a right to express your unnecessarily bleak opinions, so i'll leave you all to hijack this article and bury it in negativity.

However I'd like to add, on a more positive tone, that I personally enjoyed this wonderful event. our beautiful old city was displayed to us in all its glory, and we had the rare opportunity to see Valletta's true colours for the night. it was amazing. I came to realise that there are so many buildings I ignorantly passed by every day without knowing just how important they are to our rich history. the tours were immensely interesting, the re~enactments were enchanting, and i applaud every single musician who participated in this event and brought the streets to life with their beautiful music. the atmosphere was lively and cheerful, and it filled my heart with pride to see thousands of Maltese people bustling down the streets of Valletta to learn more about the history of their city and the origins of their own culture.

well done.

We were going to St John's Co-cathedral sometime after 11p.m., on our way there we met some friends who told us not to bother going, as it had already closed. How can anyone organize a Notte Bianca if the major attractions close so early? Weren't they supposed to be open all night?

@Mr.Tanti

So when arriving at my street and finding it full of tables and half drunk people @ 2am, through which I cannot drive, you expect me to turn my tail and go sleep somewhere else for that night not at my house?

I hope you come up with a more practical solution.

Thanks

@bonanno

every public activity is of a disturbance to someone. It is not relevant in the article neither for the activity. You don't like it? go somewhere else for that night.

Amazing. thousands braved the weather and flocked to Valletta. Prosit. One comment. Why not bring the date forward to avoid weather changes.

Obviously, the inconvenience caused to residents, like people, tables, noise even in purely residential streets till the early hours of the morning is no where mentioned in this article.
