Teachers thanked for their commitment to students
Evarist Bartolo, the Labour Party’s spokesman for education, thanked teachers who, he said, made so many sacrifices for their students to progress.
In his message for World Teachers’ Day, Mr Bartolo said that it was now more important than ever to invest in the training and continuous education of teachers.
It was also important that teachers worked in the right conditions, they had a salary which reflected their commitment, their professionalism was respected and they were involved in all changes taking place in the educational system. This was because the success of change depended on their participation.
Such changes were important for teachers to educate their students better and should not serve to turn teachers into clerks who spent a lot of time filling papers rather than teaching. It was also essential that teachers were left in peace and safeguarded from all type of violence.
Teachers, Mr Bartolo said, should be given the necessary resources to do their duties, namely technological equipment and educational material.
They should be assisted by other professionals in the health, social and psychological sectors to cater for the different needs of students.

Well said! during my 8 yrs of teaching I have been buying all sorts of resources. Printer ink, A4 papers, cardboard paper, colourful paper, containers for stationery, plastic folders, files, paints to prepare charts and pictures, carpet for class library, plastic book holders to set up an attractive class library, and the list never ends. Have you ever heard of anyone working in an office buying stationery to use at work ?

Reality is so different from what Ministers say!! The MUT fights for the lecturers... but then we primary school teachers continue to have a miserable pay, and as for resources..we do everything from our own pockets.... be it printing resources, buying UHU to stick them on kartoncin, laminating resources, buying colourful materials for class, buying accessories to decorate the class.... and mind you ... whenever we dare ask for something... we always get the same answer.... "Qed nistennew il-Finanzi"...
Be realistic please!!! we're the worst paid in all professions and nobody ever really appreciates the work we do with children in trying to educate them and give them care which is most missing in most homes!!
The increases should be for everybody, not just the lecturers.

I think the article left out these words in capitals:
'It was also important that teachers worked in the right conditions, THAT they had a salary which reflected their commitment, THAT their professionalism was respected and THAT they were involved in all changes taking place in the educational system. This was because the success of change depended on their participation.
