Five tents at the Open Centre in Hal Far, known as 'tent city' were burnt to the ground this afternoon when two gas cylinders in the public area exploded.

All items that were in the tents were lost with only the bed frames remaining.

No one was injured and no foul play is suspected, sources said.

The blaze was quickly controlled by Civil Protection firefighters from the nearby fire station, preventing its spread to nearby tents.

The Detenetion Service is replacing the tents which were destroyed.
