Six officer cadets of the Armed Forces of Malta have successfully completed a training course in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) organised by the Malta Red Cross Society.

They were presented with their course certificates by the president of Red Cross Malta, Prof. Frederick Fenech in the presence of AFM Commander, Brigadier Carmel Vassallo and Colonel Martin Bondin, who heads the AFM's personnel and administration branch.

The cadets were trained and tutored in basic principles of IHL. Given Malta's re-activation of its membership in Nato's Partnership for Peace programme, as well as the possibility of Maltese troops' deployment overseas on peace operations, lectures also covered the applicability of IHL in situations of armed conflict occurring in the course of peace operations.

Christina Saydon, a member of the Malta Red Cross Society, specialised in IHL led the course. She has trained in the law of peace operations.

The promotion and dissemination of IHL to protect victims of armed conflict is one of the major priorities of the Malta Red Cross Society.
