Rubbish galore

The five-star hotel overlooks this shambles.

August 27 was supposedly a happy day for the St Julian's community, especially for those living or working in the St George's Road area. Seeing the much anticipated 'rubbish bins' being permanently fixed along this neglected road after so many years was a welcome sight.

St George's Road used to look as if had been hit by bombs, and walking along it was an embarrassment: empty bottles, beer cans, food leftovers, food wrappings, cartons, cups, papers, cigarette butts, and all kinds of rubbish strewn all over the place. Most rubbish ends up in residents' front porches, which are also 'graced' by revellers' urine or vomit.

Just one day after the rubbish bins were put in place, I walked to the Paceville post office to post a letter. I was shocked to find a mountain of rubbish right outside the post office door. Is it too much to ask Maltapost to keep their front porch clean?

Five minutes after I left the post office, after having taken photos, I ran into some more disgusting scenes, a stone's throw away, in the direction of the EC Language Schools and directly opposite the rear-view balconies of the InterContinental Hotel.

Although over a month has passed, I have been told that the rubbish is still there.

How right you are Mr. Aquilina! What you missed but, perhaps because you wrote your letter before, is the excavation of part of St.George's Park. That was really like bombardment.
In Valletta there was Notte Bianca and in Paceville there was Giorno...Settemana...Bianca. The building contractors tried to clean the roads on Saturday afternoon. In my opinion they made a whole mess because the dust washed with water from a hose pipe was not enough to improve the situation. May I ask why the MEPA inspectors were not present? Is is like always, waiting for the public to report such incidents? Is MEPA not aware what causes such an excavation? I think that in a place like Paceville things such be done more professional. When PORTOMASO/HILTON and PENDER PLACE did excavation, trucks were washed before going on the road with their material. I hope that this will improve without delay. A bad image of Malta to our tourists!
