Malta in the US

I enjoyed reading the article 'No Maltese in Malta' by Paul Zammit Cutajar (The Sunday Times, September 14).

As I like to travel and geography was my favourite subject at school, I can add the following Maltas in other American states.

With the help of my cousin Joe and his wife Edwidge, whom I visit often in New Jersey, we have found towns named Malta in Alabama, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and, of course, Montana.

Joe assured me there are more. Any Maltese living in a town called Malta in these states may contact me at maylou@malta net.net.

There is a Malta Street in Brooklyn, which was named in 1863 in honor of the British Empire. Malta and Malta Bend, north of Albany in New York State was named after the malt industry that flourished last century. Malta, Montana used to be a numbered stop on the Pacific railroad. As the settlement grew, the inhabitants wanted a more proper name. It was agreed to blindford the station clerk, who threw a dart at a map of the world, and the dart landed on Malta. In Astoria, New York City, a section of the street in front of the Maltese Center, next to the Triboro Bridge, was recently re-named Malta Square, to honor the contributions of Maltese-Americans to the fabric of the City of New York.

FYI there is a Malta DR in the beautiful city of San Francisco named specifically for the Island of Malta. It is situated near Twin Peaks one of the most prestigeous areas in the city.. If you go to Google Earth and type in Malta Dr , San Francisco you get a good idea where Malta Dr is.

Now if History was a fovourite subject at a Maltese school, you would have be aware that during the Ottoman empire when the Maltese Island where under easy invasion at any time the Muslim Navy felt like sowing seeds they landed in Malta and Gozo and did so (can see it on many of our faces even now).

When The Saracen, as they where know, the Muslim Sailors, knew they would be recalled to Istanbul, they would kill many maltese families and steal they young daughters and take them with them.

As a result of the large number of Maltese Girls belonging to one group, In Turkey today their is a town called Malta after them.. This is a fact and important if you are interested in names.

Incidentally, things haven't changed much. Muslim's now recruit through UAE Emerates the best of the crop of Maltese Girls and encourage them to live in Dubai (as second class citizens ofcourse)/ History repeats itself.

There are 2 small villages named "Malta" in Southern Greece (Peloponnese), too.

I have personally come across a "Malta" while travelling in Austria. I could not trace any connection to the Mediterranean island however.
