Stocks, shares... and style

The Malta Stock Exchange will be in the spotlight again tomorrow but for frivolous fashion rather than financial turmoil; for a sense of splurge rather than scrounging.

Its steps will be the stage for the launch of the spring/summer 2009 collection of local design duo Charles & Ron, who have chosen Notte Bianca to showcase the latest of the CR label.

"In these difficult economic times, it is of utmost importance that we stay positive and keep a sense of glamour in our lives and this collection is a celebration of life and luxury," the designers said. The audience is likely to feel the culture - not the crunch - at the Stock Exchange tomorrow.

"As we have been designing for 15 years, this collection marks a celebration of our style."

Unwilling to reveal too many details about it, Ron maintains that "one thing is for sure: If you are in need of a mega dose of style, you can be sure to get it there!"

In a sneak preview of the collection, Ron explains the source of the inspiration: Ancient Roman and Greek culture, as well as the Orient. The spiral pattern, found in the Tarxien Temples, has been used in the jewellery design and also as embellishment on some garments.

The collection is divided in two signature block colours: Red and gold, both representing the festive spirit, he says. Draped, goddess dresses are contrasted with more sculpted styles and every outfit is the product of luxurious fabrics, including silk chiffon, silk satin, duchess satin, corded silk and viscose jersey, while the jewellery is a mix of Swarovski crystals, Perspex and metal chains. Accessories include leather bags in Italian lamb skin and their evening counterparts in duchess satin.

Charles & Ron have worked to ensure that their biannual shows are the most anticipated on the local scene. They have also participated in several international fashion events.

And the Notte Bianca means no less to them. "We both absolutely love Valletta and consider it important to support these cultural events in our beautiful capital city," the designers say, hopping onto the entertainment bandwagon and planning to add their usual flair to the sleepless night.
