The General Workers Union warned today that the new power and water tariffs proposed by the government would be a double blow to the workers - affecting their purchasing power and threatening jobs.
GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb told timesofmalta.com that the union was studying the government’s proposals in detail and would be giving a more in-depth reaction shortly.
Like the other social partners, he said, the GWU was not happy with how the so-called consultation had been made.
He said that the social partners are expected to send a joint letter to the Prime Minister soon.
The government two days ago presented the social partners with five models on how the tariffs structure would be revamped, removing the surcharge and, in most cases, government subsidies. The tariffs are expected to see household bills rise by up to €5 weeky while commercial clients are expected to see increased outlay of between €10 and €46 per week.
