A preliminary analysis to the water and electricity tariffs proposed by the government last Wednesday shows that a two-person family would see its bill increased by an average of €7.21 per week; a four-person family will see an increase of €8.96 a week and a five-person family an increase of an average of €10.24 a week, Gejtu Vella, UĦM secretary general said this afternoon,
He told a news conference that apart from the increases, the new rates would put pressure on families, industry and tourism.
The government earlier this week said 70 percent of households would see increases of between €1.50 and €5 per week.
He strongly criticised the government for not having conducted a social and economic impact study before the new tariffs were announced.
The UĦM, he said, believed in social and constructive dialogue.
The union, together with the other non-government members of the social partners, has written to the Prime Minister complaining on the lack of consultation by the government.
