Opposition leader Joseph Muscat warned today that the proposed new water and power tariffs would throw many families and businesses into uncertainty.

Dr Muscat said it was unacceptable that the government had come up with its new tariff structures without having first conducted a socio-economic assessment. This, simply, was not the method which should have been followed.

Dr Muscat briefly referred to the tariffs when he met a delegation from the Confederation of Women’s Organisations, but said the MLP would come out with an official reaction after hearing from the government.

In his meeting Dr Muscat reiterated his desire to see a debate on civil rights. He also regretted that women’s involvement in politics and other social activities was still low.

The Labour spokesman on the family and equality, Justyne Caruana, said women needed to recognise their potential and contribute more to society.
