Two developers in Gozo have been fined €93,174 for continuing to operate an illegal quarry extension in Kercem, Gozo, in defiance of a MEPA enforcement order.

The sentence was confirmed by the Appeals Court.

Both men, Carmel Cauchi and Michael Cauchi were also handed a six-month jail sentence suspended for a year, MEPA said.

In another case in Gozo, the Magistrates' Court presided by Magistrate Giovanni Grixti, found Ricardo Zammit guilty of having carried out illegal excavation works and the construction of a wine cellar within a scheduled property in Victoria without a MEPA permit. Magistrate Grixti condemned Mr Zammit to pay a fine of €15,139.80 for having failed to comply with the enforcement notice.
