A wet but warmer September

September was wet with a total of 88 mm of rain, more than the past 30-year average rainfall of 55.4 mm, the Metrological Office said.

Out of a total of 10 rainy days, the wettest day last month was Tuesday with 41.8 mm. No hail was recorded but thunderstorms were noted on the 2nd, 3rd, 14th, 23rd, 24th and 30th.

Furthermore, with an average temperature of 24.6°C, September days were warmer than the monthly average for the past 30 years by 0.2°C. The highest maximum temperature of 36.1°C was recorded on September 8, 1.3°C lower than the maximum for the past 60 years.

Meanwhile, the lowest minimum temperature last month was 15.6°C recorded on the 29th and higher than the 61-year September average by 2.4°C.

The sea temperature was 1.5°C warmer than the average of the month recorded over the past 30 years. The monthly average humidity reached 71 per cent, five per cent less than the monthly 30-year mean. Fog was recorded on September 6, which caused visibility to drop to 200 metres.

The wind had an average speed of 5.8 knots.

On average, Malta had 8.54 hours of sunshine a day, which is around the 30-year September average.

The sunniest day was the 17th with 11.2 hours and the dullest were the 27th and 30th when there was full cloud cover throughout.

Yes pray hard. the serious forecasts are for a bitter winter. satellite data for 2008 have registered a sharp decline in global mean temperature with many places on earth experiencing extremely harsh weather. scientists have registered no sunsport activity on the sun throughout the whole month of August. this is the first time that none were registered throughout a whole month since the 18th century. and when that happened, Europe was in the midsts of a period known as the 'little ice age'.

It seems that prayers for rain, at least for September, have been heard. I encourage devout Catholics to start praying as of today so that the forthcoming Winter months may be warm with comfortable temperatures. This would allay the fears of middle-class people, especially pensioners,of having to resort to heating their homes and thus paying the forthcoming exhorbitant bills which are going to hit the Maltese islands like a typical uragan!
