I refer to Gordon P. Hewitt's letter (September 24) in which, quoting the Bible, he urged that we be hospitable to strangers.

Are these the same strangers that last week attempted to accost my wife at The Strand by the Bank of Valletta cash point, which she hadn't used, using the most foul language when she chose to ignore them and walk into the Tal-Lira shop for safety? Are these the same strangers that a French-speaking tourist, who my wife met, overheard close to the same cash machine, plotting to obtain the card of the next elderly person to use the machine?

A passer-by called the police, but none arrived.

These illegal immigrants are becoming more noticeable. However it seems for all the wrong reasons.

It just cannot be right on such a small and overcrowded island.

Beware it doesn't affect your tourist trade. I usually book in May to visit in February, however, I have not yet done so for this very reason.
