On paper the upcoming Teatru Manoel music season looks like being one of the best ever. The recruitment of Mro Brian Schembri to oversee the season's repertoire seems to be paying early dividends. During this month alone there are no fewer than three outstanding musical events at the theatre.

Quite apart from the classical fare at Notte Bianca tomorrow night, the Manoel is playing host to a veritable galaxy of classical musicians this month. On October 21, the Embassy of Portugal, in collaboration with Teatru Manoel present La Serena. This comprises the Lusitania Ensemble; six musicians... two violins, a viola, a cello, piano and percussion - together with the renowned singer Teresa Salgueiro.

Four days later the Austrian embassy, again in collaboration with Teatru Manoel, will present the period instrument Vienna Academie Orchestra, under the baton of Alfred Eschwé. Herr Eschwe was born in Vienna in 1949. He later attended the Vienna Conservatory in order to study piano, violin and conducting. From 1972 to 1975 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Music with the distinguished Professor Hans Swarowsky. After a series of engagements in musical theatres throughout Austria and Germany he was appointed in 1989 as permanent conductor of the Vienna Volksoper. He has conducted many well-known orchestras including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra - and he has conducted in concert halls all over the world. The Vienna Academie Orchestra performs regularly at major festivals, including the Würzburg Mozart Festival and they also perform frequently in the great concert halls of Europe, Japan and North America.

Then finally this month on October 28 the virtuosi Italian duo, violinist Franco D'Orazio and pianist Roberto Prosseda will play works by Betta, Mendelssohn and Solbiati in a concert at Teatru Manoel entitled Music and Light. This event is a collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute and Teatru Manoel.

There are many more tasty morsels in the pipeline this season, but the music programme for October should get the Manoel's season underway in an impressive fashion.
