Malta made their debut in the LEN Comen Cup 2008 when they crushed a sub-standard Cyprus national team by 25 clear goals at the National Pool yesterday.
The Maltese, guided for the first time by Croatian coach Sergio Afric, with Peter Decesare as his assistant, were more than several notches above the miserable visitors and the quality of our players' performance could only be gauged against opponents of some calibre.
In fact, the match assumed absurd proportions, with the Maltese sending the opponents' net bulging almost at will.
Malta were led by top scorers John Soler and Mark Meli who scored a naphand each, followed by the opportunistic Matthew Pisani, who netted four times, and Niki Lanzon and Jonathan Valletta who each scored a hat-trick.
Indeed, Switzerland should offer much more adequate opposition today.
