Pizarro snatches draw for Werder at Inter

Late Messi goals lift Barca

Claudio Pizarro returned to haunt former coach Jose Mourinho by grabbing Werder Bremen's equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Inter in Champions League Group B yesterday.

Two goals by substitute Julio Baptista helped Roma recover from a goal down to win 3-1 at 10-man Bordeaux while Lionel Messi came to Barcelona's rescue with two late goals to deny Shakhtar Donetsk.

At Anfield, Robbie Keane scored his first goal for Liverpool as Rafael Benitez's men completed a comfortable 3-1 victory over PSV but Chelsea were unexpectedly held to a goalless draw by unfancied Romanians CFR Cluj.

Peruvian Pizarro, who played under the Inter coach at Chelsea, slid home Mesut Ozil's cross from close range at the far post on 62 minutes for Werder Bremen.

Inter, who now have four points from two games, had taken the lead on 13 minutes when Brazilian right-back Maicon chipped goalkeeper Tim Wiese after running on to a loose ball.

The Italian champions lost 1-0 to Milan on Sunday and again lacked shape and ideas against Werder, who have two points from their opening two group matches.

Also from Group B, Anorthosis Famagusta registered their first win in the competition when they beat Greek side Panathinaikos 3-1.

An own goal from Panathinaikos defender Jose Sarriegi set the Cypriot side on their way and four minutes later Sinisa Dobrasinovic rose above the defence to head home the second.

Dimitris Salpigidis pulled one back for Panathinaikos with a 28th-minute penalty after Jeffrey Leiwakabessy handled in the area.

Panathinaikos pressed for an equaliser in the second half but Anorthosis wrapped up the points when Hawar Taher headed home from a corner in the 78th minute.

Messi scored a brilliant chipped winner four minutes into stoppage time to give Barcelona a 2-1 victory away to Shakhtar.

Barca looked on their way to defeat following Brazilian winger Ilsinho's fine goal for Shakhtar in the last minute of the first half. But Barcelona's substitute strikers combined in the 87th minute to score an equaliser when Bojan crossed from the right, goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov spilt the ball and Messi pounced to put it in the net.

Barcelona lead the group with six points from two matches. Sporting, who beat Basel 2-0 in Lisbon, are equal on three points with Shakhtar and the Swiss side have no points.

Sergio Aguero scored his third goal in two Champions League games to help Atletico Madrid beat Olympique Marseille 2-1 and keep them top of Group D.

The 20-year-old Argentine stole in between two defenders and perfectly controlled a Maxi Rodriguez through ball before slotting past Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda.

The visitors equalised after Senegal's Mamadou Niang rose to head in after 16 minutes but Atletico's Raul Garcia sealed the win six minutes later.

After two matches Atletico and Liverpool have a maximum six points each after the English side beat PSV in the group's other game.

Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring for Liverpool after five minutes before Keane struck his first goal in his ninth start for the Reds by converting a Fernando Torres cross.

Steven Gerrard blasted home from a second half free-kick to net his 100th goal in Liverpool colours and give Benitez victory in his 250th game in charge at Anfield.

The Liverpool manager will be upset at the manner substitute Danny Koevermans was allowed to get between sleeping defenders to score a consolation goal.

Playmaker Yoann Gourcuff opened the scoring for Bordeaux with a fine angled shot from the edge of the box on 18 minutes. Bordeaux, thrashed 4-0 by Chelsea in their opening game, then had Brazilian defender Henrique sent off for elbowing Simone Perrotta.

Roma levelled with a header by Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic after 64 minutes. Striker Baptista netted from a free-kick seven minutes later before sealing victory from close range seven minutes from time.

In Romania, Didier Drogba was carried off on a stretcher midway through Chelsea's drab 0-0 draw at newcomers CFR Cluj.

The Ivory Coast striker was injured early in the second half after colliding awkwardly with a Cluj defender as he slid in to try and convert a left-wing cross from Florent Malouda.

Few scoring chances were created although Chelsea substitute Nicolas Anelka had a 78th-minute goal ruled out for offside and Eugen Trica hit the outside of the post with a long-range effort for Cluj two minutes later.

Chelsea, last season's runners-up, and Cluj share top spot in Group A with four points from two matches.
