New director takes up the reins at Dar tal-Providenza
Fr Martin Micallef, a 40-year-old priest from Luqa, has taken over as director of Dar tal-Providenza, the home for the disabled near Siggiewi.
He tells Rosanne Zammit (see video above) about his plans for the home and the challenges that it faces.
Fr Martin, a priest for the past 12 years, served at Ibraġ and as parish priest in Għaxaq and Marsascala.
He has been the church’s representative on the National Commission for Persons with a Disability for the past seven years.
His predecessor, Mgr Lawrence Gatt, is now serving as chancellor at the Curia.

Fr. Micallef, may God give you the strength, kind heart, wisdom and determination to help make the change that is needed in our society, and to ensure the residents at Dar tal-Providenza are helped to become empowered and considered as an integral part of the Maltese community.

I am sure that Fr. Martin will find the backing he requires to make a success of the mission entrusted upon him. Fr. Martin has a deep sense of commitment and social justice and I pray to God to guide him in his work for the benefit of society.

I am sure that Fr. Martin will do a very good job. He is a practical and hardworking person. He is very pleasant to work with. I Know him as a class mate at school and in our local parish as the parish priest. Congratulations and good luck FR. Martin. We will remember you in our Prayers.

We are sure that Fr. Martin will make the needed difference at Dar tal-Providenza. His vast experience with disabled persons will help him in his new role. We really hope that he will manage to change the actual attitude and make the voice of the residents heard.
For us it is a pleasure that we worked together before and look forward for the future.
May God Keeps His Hands on you and on all those who will benefit from your work.

Fr Martin on my behalf and on the part of all members of Moviment Era Gdida as much as the parishioners of Wied il-Ghajn, I wish you will continue to serve the Church in its best riches: the poor, especially those of Dar tal-Provvidenza. You have proved yourself in the past and you will continue to be the light and salt to all of us who had the privilege to meet you, come to know you and work with you. Your silent work speaks loud. The 98 needy people and the respite work Mgr Lawrence Gatt had for so long been serving, for 21long heroic years, is a challenge... thanks for reminding us about The Strength of the Weak.

Let's talk about service - not mission
Let's talk about support - not care
Let's talk about interdependence not about dependence
Let's talk about change and transformation - not status quo
Let's talk about community and not segregated buildings
Let's talk about family, neighbourhoods, relationships, sexuality - not about segregated lifestyles
Let's talk about human and civil rights not about caring for the sick and disabled
Let's stop talking about the ethos of Dar tal-Provvidenza as being the Church's mission on earth and instead talk about the dignity of the person
Fr Martin you are up to the job...go for it!

Good Bless you Fr Martin and all the staff who hadn't not been for people like you to take care of the handicapped, I shudder to think what would happen to them . KEEP IT UP God knows what he is doing and you will always find help from the outside world.
