Inspectors find no tainted Chinese food in Malta

Chinese milk products are removed from supermarket shelves in Taiwan.

Health inspectors have increased inspections in retail outlets, including Chinese Restaurants, Asian food sellers and importers known to trade in Chinese foodstuffs but have found no tainted products in Malta, the Food Safety Commission said this afternoon.

"Health inspectors are performing documentary, identity and physical checks in case of products containing more than 15% milk or milk products originating from China.

"All investigations to date have proved negative and there is therefore no reason for concern," the commission said.

It said it would issue the guidelines to the public should investigations reveal the importation into Malta of any potentially contaminated product.

The investigations were launched after some countries found Melamine in food products, notably children's formula milk, originating in China. The dangerous chemical has caused many children to fall sick in China itself.
