Consignment of vegetables was a front for smuggled alcohol
A consignment of vegetables on board a truck arriving from Pozzallo, Sicily, served to hide a smuggled shipment of alcohol, confiscated by Customs on Tuesday.
Customs enforcement officers confiscated 154 bottles of whisky, gin, vodka and brandy and 93 litres of wine from the truck, which was also seized for further investigations.
Although the driver declared he was transporting mushrooms and tomatoes on board, the truck was escorted to the importer's warehouse and thoroughly searched.

Can anyboby explain on how the confiscation takes place?
If the importer is taken to court then the bottles have to be shown 'physically' as evidence against him, no?
Or am I watching too many American movies?

Smuggling is a bad thing, not just a misdemeanor - booze this time, maybe explosives or even people next time?
The driver and company should lose all it's import licences (if it has any?) and have all it's vehicles restricted to Malta only use. This could be done by flagging all the company / owners vehicles on the registration database, and whenever the registrations are checked it will show a red flag to the customs officers / police.
