Joseph Muscat coming soon to a residence near you

Labour leader Joseph Muscat will embark on a nationwide, one-to-one campaign that will see him and his team visiting each and every household on the islands. The Malta Labour Party door-to-door membership recruitment drive, expected to last eight or nine months, will kick off on Monday, starting in Valletta.

The deputy leader for party affairs, Toni Abela said the recruitment campaign is aimed at bolstering the number of members registered with the party, from the present 19,000 to 40,000 or 50,000. Keeping in mind that during the last election the party enjoyed the support of 141,000 voters, this should be reflected in its members, Dr Abela said.

Taking part in the campaign will be a mix of party candidates, MPs and the party leadership itself, including Dr Muscat. They will be carrying an official ID card, certifying that the holder is authorised to be the party's representative on this recruitment drive. Representatives of each of the MLP sectional committees will be responsible for organising the door-to-door visits for their respective town or village, Dr Abela said.

Visits forming part of the campaign, coordinated by Emanuel Cuschieri, will be held during the week from Monday to Friday, between 5 and 8 p.m. Every household in every locality will be visited, Dr Abela pledged, irrespective of political belief or support.

He appealed to all Maltese and Gozitan people to be willing to listen to what the MLP had to say, even if they might not agree with the party.

"We appeal to you to be willing to listen to what we have to say," he said, "and we will be willing to listen to what you have to say."

Dr Abela said the party will be doing its utmost to reach out to people, ensuring that contact details are left at residences found empty throughout the recruitment drive.

By the way you PN apologists have come out against the idea of Joseph Muscat visiting households shows one thing. You're scared stiff of the effect it might have on the general population. And by the way you're trying to shoot it down, it's a darn good idea. The best in town, or should I say in the country? Keep it up Joseph! You're going to give them a lot of sleepless nights these elves!

His Grace Archbishop Cremona will take three years to visit every Parish for his Pastoral Plan; but then there's only one of him..... no committee, or entourage or delegation.

When I was young a renowned soft drinks company made a publicity campaign sending a beautiful girl to random residences and if the residences she visited had the soft drinks she was promoting in the fridge she would give the same amount of drinks to that residence.
What would Miss Joseph give us ?
BTW with Manwel Cuschieri's "coordination" one knows what to expect.

is this the new Labour, fresh, not like Gonzi? If so, it puts me off all the more and shows how inexperienced JM is. Or is he focusing on these things to alienate us from other more important issues. certainly not the way to catch floating voters. First the 15,000EUR tax for those who fail to tow party line and not standing up for the Maltese rights like Simon Busuttil, then trying to steal the show by seeming to be the one to suggest voting for 16year olds, leave them to their studies and to form their own opinions, then divorce, then needing more people to pay up membeship and now the worst- calling at EVERYdoor. Leave us in peace and give us a break from politics, we have had enough during your sunday summer sermons, but calling at our doors is an invasion. We do not want politics in our EVERYDAY life. I am not afraid of not opening my door to you , but that is a sure way of not getting my vote. What more?

Why visit all households and not labour ones who still refuse to pay their membership fees?
Does Joseph expects nationalists to enroll as members of the labour party? Or is this just an exercise to form a database for the party. Is this the earthquake promised by Joseph? There is nothing new to listen to. The same old faces who we all know their worth.

@ S Micallef. Mr Cuschieri is quite an expert in door-to-door activites...why shouldn't Labour use his potential? And anyway how do you want Labour to become? a second PN?

@ A Mangion. Dr Abela had just made a suggestion that Labour should have a commercial entitiy which would help the Party fininancially-wise. Than the journalist came up with a question about super markets. PN owns comercial companies, why shouldn't Labour?

@ M BArtolo. Candidates are elected on a Party's ticket. Thus, they should follow the Party's directives. I can't understand what you see wrong in this...apart from the fact that it's something which has to do with Labour.

it's so clear that Nats are panicing. Keep on giving them a hard time Joseph :). This is the way forward, keepin in touch with the general public and the grassroots.

This is coercion in my book. And it is not the sole domain of the MLP either.

There used to be little stickers for your front door and which said something like "No beggars, politicians, priests, salesmen or prostitutes." I think that another run is in order.

"Min mhux maghna - kontra taghna" is a familiar quote from the MLP of the recent past.

Door to door solicitation by the MLP is yet another attempt to identify their supporters. Using the quote above, it also implies that they will also know who does not. Is this not a revisit to what happened in the 70s and 80s when MLP supporters were the 'preferred' citizens and the rest had to take cover?

Are there no laws against door to door selling in Malta? Should the MLP not apply for a licence first ? After all, they are selling memberships at a price.

On the other hand, Joseph, going door to door, will need new shoes every few streets and thus he will be helping the economy. It will also involve a lot of time smiling, pressing hands and reintroducing his 'new' deputies and a recycled Jason. Will that leave him enough time to attend to his duties as Leader of the Opposition? Enough time to write a million reports he promises every time a new government initiative is announced?

Way to go Joseph! Malta l-ewwel, qabel kollox?

The election is in four years time. Please give us a break and leave all political home visits till the last year.

@A.Mangion +S.Micallef

Before someone starts speaking on tidying someone elses house , first this someone has to tidy his first !!! and believe me there is SOOOO MUCH to tidy ... GOT THE MESSAGE ??

Why would they need to go door-to-door for a database? All the major parties already have it. The basis of it is in the public domain in the form of the Electoral Register. If you have not yet been inundated with political propaganda and similar junk mail - from whatever origin - then I think that you are not yet registered as a voter.
M Bartolo (on 1/10/08)
So here you go. Joseph the fund raiser now. This initiative smacks like putting the interest of the party in front of that of the public.

By the way, what about the 15 Euro K penalty imposed on MLP Candidates for MEPs in 2009? Of course it is still there. Once again. An initiative which smells putting the party first, and not the public.

Thank you Joe, but no thanks. My door will remain closed.
Michael Caruana (on 1/10/08)
Great, is this the earthquake Joseph has promised? Manuel Cuschieri running the show?
A Mangion (on 1/10/08)
Some things Never Change; Labour is one of them.

New political season with old faces, old ideas and old propoganda. This same strategy was adopted by Dr Sant prior ro 1996 election.

Now am waiting for the new MLP supermarkets to open in a town next to me!! That's a promise made by Dr Abela before his election. Interesting to see what pricing strategy it will employ. No more high cost of living. we will be in wonderland soon!!!

End of dreams now. Back to work!
S Micallef (on 1/10/08)
If the political earthquake is keeping Jason Micallef, investing in Manuel Cuschieri and trying to join forces with AD, then we’re in for a circus. MLP change the leader, but not the leadership! It is unbelievable how a guy who spent 4 years as MEP is pushing Manuel Cuschieri in the front line! Despite the fact that his right hand is Toni Abela and his left is Anglu Farrugia. Some things never change, Labour is one of them.
h. Dempster (on 1/10/08)
@Anthony Mercieca.
Come on mate let be civilized and listen to what the guy has to say and judge later.
Dont be the Judge & jury.
Anthony Mercieca (on 1/10/08)
May I ask what is behind this campaign at this point in time - obviously apart from what officially claimed by LP speakers. I fear this exercise is to build up a data base and be pestered with party propoganda.
