Enemalta last year paid out €22,224 in compensation to consumers for damages suffered as a result of power surges, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt has disclosed.

A further €2,945 have so far been paid out this year.

The minister said in reply to a parliamentary question by Censu Galea (PN) that consumers reported 163 power surges last year while the corporation's employees reported 24.

This year, consumers have reported 124 surges while Enemalta officials have reported seven.

Dr Gatt explained that compensation is given after a process of investigation by Enemalta.
