Military enthusiasts and those aspiring to join the armed forces can get a taste of army life on Sunday when the Armed Forces of Malta open their doors at Luqa Barracks to the public between 10 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.

During the open day, the AFM will be holding a field day for children and adults, allowing them to interact with service personnel while seeing their equipment and capabilities, Captain Mark Mallia, in charge of ceremonial and protocol, said.

The AFM will this year be celebrating their 38th anniversary since their formation in 1970. This also coincides with the 35th anniversary of the Italian Military Mission's arrival in Malta.

Capt. Mallia said that, throughout the day, visitors will be able to have some experience of a soldier's day at work.

"Obviously, no day is typical for the army as we face multiple challenges. However, we try our best in covering most of what we do. This outing for the family and groups seeking something different has proven to be very popular in the past," Capt. Mallia explained.

The event is expected to feature static displays, a demonstration by the bomb disposal unit, a rescue simulation by the air squadron and Italian Military Mission, drills, a military defilè, a shooting range for those over 16, rides aboard military vehicles, an assault course and a rock-climbing wall.

A blood bank will also be available at the medical centre for those who wish to donate blood and an art exhibition by former commanders and active soldiers will be mounted.

The day ends with a one-hour seated concert featuring Italian pieces, such as Nabucco and Bolero to mark the Italian Military Mission's anniversary. A flag-down ceremony will follow.

A stand will be set up where those wishing to enlist in the army as a recruit or officer cadet may obtain information and application forms.
