Parliament resumes this evening after the summer recess with the highlight today being the resignation of Labour MP Joseph Cuschieri to make way for the co-option of Labour leader Joseph Muscat.

Dr Muscat is expected to be sworn in as member of Parliament on Wednesday when he will also be appointed Leader of the Opposition, a post that was temporarily filled by Labour MP Charles Mangion over the past months.

Missing from the House will be Labour MP and health spokesman Karl Chircop, who is receiving treatment for brain haemorrhage in a British hospital.

The items on the agenda of the House include the second reading of a Bill amending the Malta Freeport Act, the first reading of a Bill amending the Broadcasting Act and the first reading of a Bill amending the Financial Provisions Act. There will also be six motions dealing with the substitution of members on various committees.
