Burden-sharing is hardly a solution, merely pushing the envelope. These people are being purposely misguided by people with an agenda. Telling people that moving around because it is an age-old 'custom'and therefore their right, and living on handouts and asking for respect and tolerance into the bargain is acceptable - all this is unfair not least to the illegals themselves for, as sure as water is wet, their existence and that of their children to whom they are imparting this philosophy that living off other people, exploiting others' resources and demand respect and tolerance is somehow acceptable - such lives will implode sooner rather than later. Respect can only be received if there is self-respect to begin with. This is not the way forward. It is as simple as this. And without resorting to Holy quotes and other obscurantist paraphernalia that only serve to muddy said 'wet water'.

@ Louise Vella

The answers to your questions are a resounding NO.

Can the people sleep with their mind at rest when so many ILLEGAL immigrants are landing undetected?

How can we ever be sure that no terrorists have similarly landed with arms, ammunition and explosives that may have been hidden?

With the military equipment that we have we cannot detect any ship or large floating body.
Malta can be overtaken by any small power, but we have NATO or EU who will come over to liberate us from our enemy. Does Gaddafi know that he can take us, with all our oil reserves anytime?
How funny the knights with all their primitive military machine had defended the island; and in 2008?

By the way who is wathcing the radar screens or is it another like a mid-air collision?

News items like this are alarming indeed! Thank goodness they were apprehended by the police. Who knows how many more have landed without being detected?

It is evident there needs to be better border control to stop such incidents recurring. Our national security is at stake. These people should be deported immediately. Never mind burden-sharing - lawbreakers must not be rewarded.

why didn't you offer them something to eat at rita's? the maltese rabbit is cooked perfectly plus they will get closer to our culture....

This is not the first time t that illegal immigrants were reported to have landed undetected and much less intercepted on Maltese shores. The fact that tens of people have repeatedly reached our shores without being detected and intercepted , indicates that our coastal security is therefore zilch for all intents and purposes.
Charles Vella (on 28/9/08)
Ohh!! It's the famous number!! 28!!!! Fancy that!
Edwin Mifsud (on 28/9/08)
If only these migrants would always land on the exact same spot.

They I would consider applying to open a duty free shopping at the point of arrival :)

On a more serious note: Hon Mifsud Bonnici did anyone volunteer to put words to practice yet?

Or will there be a bureaucratic process to the burden sharing pact?
louise vella (on 28/9/08)
1. Does anybody think the EU's Immigration Pact will make any difference to the influx of illegal immigrants to Malta?
2. Is anybody convinced by Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici's arguments in favour of the EU Immigration pact in his recent statements to the media?
3. Does anybody think Dr Mifsud Bonnici is the best person to fight for Malta's rights and interests at the EU's Council of Ministers?
4.Are you convinced that Dr Mifsud Bonnici is determined to stop the influx of illegal immigrants to Malta?
5. Do you think that Dr Mifsud Bonnici's thinking on illegal immigration is (a) close to Maltese public opinion or (b) close to that of the NGOs?
Kenneth Saliba (on 28/9/08)
Like Mr Muscat I wish to see European solidarity being practised by seeing the various European countries taking their due quota of the illegal immigrants which are eating away at our very limited resources. Such qoutas needs to be established on a per capita basis depending on the size and means of each country. I'm afraid so far we have only gotten lip service from Europe and this on a voluntary basis!
A step in the right direction for sure - but we need concrete action in the immediate and short term. If we don't get this then the only way we can make ends meet and deter the further invasion of our country is by detaining these ILLEGAL migrants (please stop calling them irregular because these people are breaking LAWS not traffic codes and not only do they get off scott free but they also get rewarded by voting at local elections for it - last time I parked slightly out of a parking bay (guess that might be termed an irregularity) I got fined for it!

Protecting our countries resources for its taxpayers is NOT being racist, and our politicians and media need not be shy about this.
Paul Muscat (on 28/9/08)
Only fools and horses believe that our European "partners" will share "our" illegal immigration burden.
Iain Sims (on 28/9/08)
@David Muscat:

None. In the first instance because they're not refugees, they're illegal immigrants.

' MALTA GETS ITS WAY'

You mean- More immigrants heading this way.

The drums of Africa have sent the message' Land in Malta'

I heard that the European christians are waiting on the steps of Castille to take immigrants back to their country. In fact, the Vatican were the first.
Raymond Sammut (on 28/9/08)
@ David Muscat

The burden sharing agreement has already been put into effect. These are just the first 28 of Gonzi's surge.
d. borg (on 28/9/08)
Oh no not again. I thought that for this season we had seen the last of them. When is this nightmare going to end?
Charles Sammut (on 28/9/08)
Word spreads fast. They must have heard of the "burden sharing" agreement and want to be amongst the first to benefit from it.

They will be disappointed.
David Muscat (on 28/9/08)
Now's the time to put the burden sharing agreement into effect. Let's see how many countries will now step forward and volunteer to take this boatload.
