The Housing Authority has been at the forefront in the promotion of more environment-friendly buildings through its housing projects since 2004.

Following the successful energy saving social housing project at Tal-Ftieħ, Birkirkara, and the continuous initiatives to implement energy-saving measures in its new social housing projects, the Housing Authority is moving a step forward in this field.

Eco-homes and better energy performance in building in Malta and Gozo were always high on the authority's agenda, however, the authority is delving into other innovative measures to promote the environment through renewable energy sources and energy-efficient measures.

The authority has secured funds under the Structural Funds through the European Regional Development Fund to be able to invest in such measures. Through its new pilot project, Energy Smart Authority, the Housing Authority will convert its offices in Floriana into an eco-friendly, energy smart building.

The authority will install a small-scale photovoltaic system on the roof and energy-efficient measures in its lighting system. The project is targeted to analyse the results of the photovoltaic system installed that could be potentially used for future social housing projects while promoting the use of renewable energy sources.

An exercise will be also carried out to analyse the impact of the innovative energy efficient measures to be installed in the lighting system while promoting energy efficiency. With this project the authority aims to reduce energy consumption and achieve cost savings while generating power through solar energy.

This pilot project is in line with the authority's policy to invest further in energy saving in building and the residential sector. It is also in line with the government's strategy to stimulate investment in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in the public sector.
