A man was this afternoon given a suspended jail term and fined €50 after he admitted to assaulting a policewoman who tried to stop him from using the ladies’ toilets. The incident happened when the man was drunk.

The Court heard 28-year-old Malcolm Ciantar admit to assaulting and slightly injuring PC Carmen Gauci and causing €45 damage to her watch at Sky Club in Paceville yesterday at 2 a.m.

Mr Ciantar paid for the damage and apologised for his actions. Earlier in the afternoon the police said the policewoman had been bitten in the assault.

In a separate case, 30-year-old Englishman, Steward Nielsen Robert, admitted to injuring Emanuel Coleiro and damaging his belongings when he was drunk and not in a position to look after himself in Sliema at about 5 a.m. yesterday. He was conditionally discharged for six months after he too apologised and paid for damage caused.
