A 29-year-old driver who admitted to seriously injuring a woman and another motorist who suffered a 23 per cent disability was fined €2,400 and had his licence suspended for three months.
Andrew Camilleri of Mtarfa admitted to driving dangerously and negligently along the Coast Road in Baħar Iċ-Ċagħaq on October 5, 2003 at 3 p.m. when he collided with a car being driven by Raymond Gatt.
The court heard that Mr Gatt suffered a 23 per cent disability. Janet Bartolo, a passenger in Mr Gatt's car, also suffered serious injury and was, for a period of time, in danger of losing her life. She broke both legs and an arm and suffered several fractures to her pelvis.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Lawrence Quintano, heard that Mr Camilleri had been driving carelessly along the Coast Road when the incident occurred.
In handing down judgment, the court took into consideration the fact that Mr Camilleri had been driving dangerously and as a direct result of his carelessness had seriously injured two people. The court also took into consideration the fact that Mr Camilleri's insurance had compensated the victims.
Police Inspector Ramon Mercieca prosecuted.
