The Reuters report (September 6) on the apparent association between maternal depression and harmful effects on early child development is interesting. Equally interesting is professor Basant Puri's claim that depression (including that during and after pregnancy) can be successfully treated, and its recurrence prevented, by an extract of fish oil, and he's written a book about his research. Furthermore, there are also scientific claims from various medical centres that fish oil supplementation of the pregnant mother improves foetal brain development and brain function in childhood.

Because some fish may contain heavy metal toxins, purified fish oil extracts are considered safer than eating a lot of fish. Prof. Puri is a psychiatrist and medical scientist at London's Hammersmith Hospital. His book on successful and safe treatment of depression with fish oil extract is available from www.igennus.com.
