Seven Ghanaians, including a child, and a Nigerian who arrived here as illegal immigrants will today leave for their homeland under an assisted voluntary Foreign Ministry scheme co-funded by the European Commission.

A Ghanaian returned to his home country earlier this week. An Ethiopian and another two Ghanaians should depart between later this week and early the next.

The return project coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in conjunction with its partners SOS Malta and Med-Europe of Italy and called DAR, is encouraging an increasing number of illegal migrants to return to their country of origin. Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg, who is attending the United Nations Assembly in New York, has raised the issue of illegal migration with several of his counterparts.

DAR will be holding a seminar on Best Practices In Assisted Voluntary Return at the Old University Building in St Paul Street, Valletta on October 9.

Senior immigration officials from several countries will take part in the seminar. Attendance is free of charge.
