Obituary

BONNICI. On September 23, ELIZABETH, n‚e Dickson, aged 56, of Marsa, passed away peacefully at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband John, her daughters Joanne and Elizabeth and their partners, her grandchildren Thomas, Jonathan, Jacob and Kate, her brothers and sisters n Malta and abroad, her mother-in-law, her husband's family, many other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Sir Paul Boffa Hospital tomorrow at 2 p.m. for St Sebastian parish church, Qormi, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2.30 p.m. followed by interment in the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request, but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord grant her eternal rest.

MAMO. On September 22, at Mater Dei Hospital, JOHN of Vittoriosa, aged 89, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Emma, n‚e Darmanin, his in-laws Caroline Mamo, Dr Lawrence Darmanin and his wife Mary Ellen, residing in the United Kingdom, Joseph and Godfrey and his wife Pia, nephews and nieces, their families, Josie Ciantar who helped him so much during his illness, Marilyn Aquilina, Stephen Ciantar, Joseph Mamo and his wife Matty, Mary Rose and her husband Emanuel Cassar, residing in Australia, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.45 p.m. for St Dominic's church (il-Lunzjata), Vittoriosa, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2.30 p.m., followed by interment at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

TORPIANO. On September 22, CATHERINE, n‚e Fenech, of Balzan, widow of Michael, aged 89, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her niece Helen and her husband Anthony Sant Portanier, her in-laws, other nephews and nieces and their respective families, relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Casa Antonia today at 2.30 p.m. for Balzan parish church where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 3 p.m., followed by interment at Mosta cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant her eternal rest. The family would like to thank the management and staff of St Catherine's Home, Attard, particularly Sr Awstella, and Casa Antonia, Balzan, for their constant care and dedication.

Puccini concert

The Classique Foundation will be staging a vocal and orchestral concert, Puccini 150 - Anniversary Concert, on the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday.

The concert will be held on November 8 at 7.30 p.m. at the Aurora Opera House, Victoria and will include the composer's most famous arias and duets from masterpieces such as Manon Lescaut, La BohŠme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot. It will also include a number of orchestral works which are staged less often, some of which will even be performed in the Maltese islands for the first time. Tickets sell at _10. Reservations can be made through the Aurora Opera House (7955 1871) and Anthony D'Amato (2123 4348).

Historic houses

Heritage Malta is once again organising a certificate course in caring for historic houses.

The course is primarily intended for homeowners, professionals and crafts persons and others involved in the caring of houses of character and historic houses in Malta.

It will help participants to appreciate better the urban development of our old towns and villages and the architectural development within them. It will also give guidance on the best practices which are to be used in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and use of these houses.

This will give better knowledge on what is possible to do oneself and when the professional needs to be called in. Two 10-hour courses will take place at the Institute of Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage, Heritage Malta, Bighi, Kalkara. The first course will be in English with sessions held on October 6, 10, 13, 17 and 20.

The course will be repeated in Maltese on October 17, 20, 24, 27 and 31. Lottery winner

James George Cassar, who is in Malta on a long holiday from Australia, won a four-night holiday for two in Rome, including flights and accommodation, as part of an HSBC lottery to celebrate the first anniversary of its Marsascala branch.
