The following is a quote from the very helpful site veterinary.gov.mt: "In Malta, it is illegal to possess certain types of dogs, such as the pit bull terrier".

While congratulations do go out for this site's creation, shame must definitely be heaped upon those who daily ignore or are - even more shamefully - unaware of the daily advertisements online and in print selling and advertising sites promoting pit bulls on our rock. Worse still are the daily sightings of these dogs being walked in public areas such as the Sliema front or various main roads in San Ġwann.

While we have not heard of any dog fighters being arrested of late, it would be most unwise to believe this barbaric pastime has waned and is no longer practised on a weekly basis. Whether advertised as pets or otherwise, the possession of these dogs is illegal and should be treated as such! Must we really wait for some other mauling before any enforcement is actually carried out?
