Statue of Our Lady of Pompeii

This franka stone group statue is located opposite the granaries at St Elmo Place.

The group is composed of Our Lady of Pompeii holding the infant Jesus on her lap who is presenting the Rosary to St Dominic, kneeling on the left. Our Lady is presenting the Rosary to St Theresa, kneeling on the right. The statue stands on a low pedestal and is supported by a cantilever concrete slab fixed to the wall.

The statue is probably the work of a local sculptor and is not refined as other corner statues, yet it is a good representation of local craftsmanship. The statue has recently been polychromed in a naïve manner. The statue is reputed to have stood in St Joseph Street, Valletta, until the 1970s.

Mepa scheduled the Statue of Our Lady of Pompeii as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice No. 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
