62 outdoor tables, 209 chairs confiscated in Marsascala
Officials from the Government Properties Division, accompanied by members of the police's ALE unit, confiscated all illegally placed furniture outside restaurants in Marsascala on Sunday, the government said yesterday.
Seven establishments were found to be violating their encroachment permits, regardless of a warning sent to them on September 16.
In total, 62 tables, 209 chairs, seven flower pots, two umbrellas and three amusement machines were confiscated.
Officials further notified these restaurants that their encroachment permits have been withdrawn.
If another permit application is to be filed, these owners must pay €1,000 as an administration fee before their application is considered.
The government promised more enforcement action in other parts of the island.
Establishments in Sliema, Marsaxlokk, Birżebbuġa, Buġibba, Xlendi and Marsalforn have been targeted in similar action over the past few weeks.

Such enforcement is very welcome but it should also be applied to other trading establishments, mainly those in the motor vehicle business. At best, these establishments can erect a perimeter wall defining their property from the public roadway.

you guys have no idea. Yes I agree that tables and chairs on pavments should be controlled, but reality Is that profits made are really a minimum, nowhere near the figures that u are imagining, don't forget that wages, rents, electricity, maintenance, licence fees, MTA marketing contribution, plus the obvious tax, vat,and cost of stocks. You really think that from a few extra tables they are making so much money. I'd like to see what you would say if there where no more establishments due to lack of investors.

Too little too late I would say.
We're now at the end of summer. These people have made 1000's of euros with these "illegal" tables and chairs. Now that the season is over, instead of taking the tables and chairs for storage, they had them removed by government officials.
They will buy new ones next year and pay the €1,000 administration fee with a fraction of the money they made this year using these chairs and tables.
WOW. What an achievement boys!!!!
