An Indian submarine has been in Grand Harbour for the past few days, an unusual visitor among the cruise liners berthed at Valletta Waterfront.

The submarine is of the Russian-built Kilo class, known in the Indian Navy as the Sindhughosh class.

They are diesel-electric vessels, some of which are equipped with anti-ship cruise missiles with a range of 220 km, along with torpedoes.

They have a displacement of 3,000 tonnes (submerged), a maximum diving depth of 300 meters, top speed of 18 knots and are able to operate solo for 45 days with a crew of 53.
