Encroachment abuse continues despite law enforcement

Inspectors from the Lands Department swooped on Marsascala again last night, confiscating four truckloads of street furniture placed on public pavements illegally.

A spokesman for the Parliamentary Secretariat responsible for land said this was the third such enforcement action at Marascala, made necessary by the fact that bar owners and restaurateurs were continuing to block public walkways with tables and chairs by exceeding the limitations of their encroachment permits.

He said a bar owner who shouted abuse at the inspectors is to be taken to court.

The abusing owners had their encroachment permits withdrawn and will need to pay €1,000 to re-apply.

Over the weekend the inspectors also carried out raids at Birzebbuga and Marsaxlokk.
