I have spent past last eight years working as a missionary in the parish of La Tomilla, Arequipa, Peru. The vocation of a missionary priest is very rewarding but very challenging too, especially if one aspires to live the authentic missionary vocation to the full.

Being a missionary is not just an adventure living away from your country, culture and friends. It also means a total and personal commitment to serve the Lord in His poor people.

I am working with hundreds of poor families. I provide them with daily food from our recently inaugurated 'kitchen' and with free medical care and medicines. Our new large clinic was opened last December. In the parish we also have two nurseries to look after abandoned children. Besides, we provide care for the elderly who are hungry or sick. We are currently focusing our resources on building small houses, or adding toilets and showers for the families who live in huts.

I would like to thank the Mission Fund (of Eureka Court, Block A, Flat 6, Main Street, Mosta MST 1018), which recently sent me $1,867 for these projects. I encourage you all to make donations or contribute used stamps and telecards to the Mission Fund to continue to help the Maltese missionaries throughout the world.

I congratulate Fr Louis Mallia on his new appointment as superior of the Missionary Society of St Paul (MSSP) in Malta and on the success of Oħloq Tbissima 2008. Many thanks to all the helpers and all benefactors of Ċentru Thanks also to all my friends and benefactors who constantly support my parish and my work. Keep it up; we really need your help.

Note: Other missionaries who wrote to The Sunday Times to thank the Mission Fund for its donation are Sr Anne Savona and Sr Carmen Farrugia (Jerusalem), Fr Frank Cortis, MSSP (Arequipa), and Fr Frank Tabone Adami (Apucarana, Brazil).
