Five localities urged to name roads after Mahatma Gandhi
The Gandhi Monument Council has invited the mayors of five localities in Malta to name one of their major streets after peace icon Mahatma Gandhi.
Rev. Gene Savoy Jr and Rajan Zed, council coordinators, said they would prefer the name of the road to be Mahatma Gandhi Marg (marg meaning path).
Rev. Savoy is head bishop of the International Community of Christ and Mr Zed is the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism.
The request has been made to the local councils of Birkirkara, Qormi, Mosta, Żabbar and Rabat.
The Gandhi Monument Council, with headquarters in the US, is composed of Christian (various denominations), Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha'I and Native American clergy.
According to Mr Zed and Rev. Savoy, the purpose of the council is to commemorate Mr Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence, his commitment to world peace and his work for the uplift of the downtrodden.
Gandhi was one of the few men in history to fight simultaneously on moral, religious, political, social, economic and cultural fronts.
His life and thought had an enormous impact on the world and he continues to be widely revered as one of the greatest moral, political and peace leaders of the 20th century.

As a tourist I have to say this idea is madness. Whilst I have the greatest respect for Mahatma Gandhi what has he got to do with Malta?
Malta has at present and has had in the past many great people. Surely the streets and roads of Malta should be named after those Maltese people who did their bit for their country.

Malta does not belong to the Maltese ANYMORE!!!! the people who voted to enter the EU gave Malta AWAY.. and now this is just one more issue to show the Maltese people Hey look we are invading your Island little by little......
The only hope for Malta is to pull out of the EU before it is taken over completely
God help this Island.......

What a waste of time ............ there are so many important issues concerning our country’s Identity & to improve our cultural sector, instead naming a road in Malta for an alien in our history remains an important issue!

No one can deny that he was a great man, but they have hundreds of thousands of streets in India to name them after him.
As for Aldo Moro, he has helped Malta when in need.
I am against naming our streets after foreigners for we have a lot of prominent Maltese people after whom we can name our streets.

In the article it says that this "Council" INVITED these 5 localities to name a road after Gandhi. No one is dictating and no one is forcing. The 5 council might decide not to take up the invitation. I cannot understand why anyone needs to take any offence.
Russia can ask us to name a road for Putin if they want, and Libya can ask us to name one for Gaddafi!!! Its all up to us to choose!!! A colonial mentality is when you suck up to foreigners. When you make your own choices you are free and independent.

Without in any way contesting that Gandhi was a great man, I believe that we have enough great Maltese men and women after whom to name our streets, without the need of any "urging" from foreign bodies.

I agree that Mahatma Ghandi was a great man, but I disagree that we should name our streets after foreign persons, whoever they are and especially if they have had no connection with Malta.
As an example, if I remember correctly, they have a street named after Patrice Lumumba in Fgura. Can anyone tell me what connection this Congolese or whatever had with Malta?
We have enough Maltese people to name our streets after them, so please stop the colonial mentality.
