The organisers of WICT 2008, the first national ICT conference promoting research and applications of technologies and practices in the field of ICT, have registered strong interest both locally and from abroad.
Abstract submissions covering a broad range of research topics were submitted by the various research groups within the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta, which is organising the event, as well as from the Maltese ICT industry.
These research topics include social networks, user-adaptive systems, location-based services, cognitive networks, computer security, computer graphics, video streaming, hardware design/ verification and computer simulation,
These topics will be presented during the two-day WICT conference on November 17 and 18 at the Aula Magna, Old University Building, Valletta.
The conference has also attracted two high-profile keynote speeches by Stephen Hodges, from the Microsoft Research Lab in Cambridge, and Pythagoras Papadimitriou from Sun Microsystems. Their visit is being made possible by Microsoft Malta Ltd and Computime.
Dr Hodges will be talking about Microsoft Research Cambridge Labs' efforts in computer mediated-living research. This encompasses different research groups, each of which takes a cross-disciplinary approach to research that emphasises the role of the user in the design, development and evaluation of technology in everyday life.
Dr Papadimitriou will be talking about the challenges of "identity management" which deals with the provision of authentication, authorisation and auditing both within the enterprise as well as across extranets in today's global business environment. He will be talking about the challenges faced when dealing with managing, protecting, storing, verifying and sharing identity data and personal identifiable information in general.
The main sponsors for this event are Go, Ericsson, Microsoft, MITTS, the Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications and SmartCity Malta.
